Fast foods are a huge blessing for people who work. After a long and tedious day at work, coming home to fast foods or processed foods is the easy way out. The last thing on our minds is a nutrition packed vegetarian meal. These little shortcuts we take can cause immense damage and irrevocable danger to our health in the long run. A decision to lead a healthy vegetarian life should be based on eating beneficial carbohydrates and a balanced diet. Refined carbohydrates are harmful and unhealthy. Refined carbohydrates are foods from which the bran, hull, fiber are removed while processing, such as white rice, white bread, white pasta etc. Refined carbohydrates and sugars trigger an increase in the blood sugar levels and the body responds to this by raising the level of insulin. The more refined carbohydrates you eat, the more insulin the body needs to pump out to deal with the excess blood sugar. Over a period of time, the body becomes sluggish and you develop insulin resistance due to the high amount of insulin being pumped day in and day out. Recent research also claims that the risk of getting stomach cancer is high in people that consumed a high amount of refined grains. Refined sugars and carbohydrates have also been known to be a contributing factor in gallbladder disease, according to a recent study. A direct link has been noticed between the incidence of gallbladder disease in people who consumed high amount of sugars. Carbohydrates have also proven to increase the incidence of heart disease. Triglycerides are major sources of fat in our body and they provide energy. They are needed by the body but trouble is caused and they have a negative effect when they remain at elevated levels for a long period of time. This is exactly what heavy consumption of carbohydrates does. It keeps the level of triglycerides high in the blood. A diet low in fat and high in carbohydrates dramatically increases the triglyceride levels and reduces the levels of HDL, which is the good cholesterol. Refined sugars are extremely bad for the body as they increase the rate of excretion of calcium from your body, which is connected to your skeletal health. Simply put, as your sugar and refined carbohydrate intake increases, your bone density decreases.
Let laziness not creep in! Give your body the importance it deserves and take care of it by taking out time to prepare a nutrient-dense and delicious vegetarian meal. Your body and your conscience, will thank you for it in the long run. It certainly takes a great deal of will power to drop all bad habits and get into a healthy routine. It needs major lifestyle changes, which every person needs to make in order to stay healthy. |
