The wrong notion that a vegetarian diet does not meet the body's needs, should be dispelled. A well-planned diet can turn out to be more nutritious than a meat diet. A vegetarian diet consists of primarily plant-based foods such as whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. This type of diet typically includes more fiber and less fat and cholesterol when compared to a meat diet.

No matter what the situation or age is, there is plenty of variety in a vegetarian diet and it can certainly meet the nutritional requirements. Children, teenagers, older people, pregnant or breast-feeding women can do very well with vegetarianism.

Use creativity when planning meals. Consciously increase consumption of vegetables and beans by eating them at lunchtime too rather than only at dinner. Keep goals such as serving a vegetable everyday for lunch and two vegetables for dinner. A complete meal can also be planned around a vegetable. Baked potato can be a mouth watering and a hearty entrée; when served with baked beans, sauce of stewed tomatoes or a little salsa. A tempting meal can also be made with pasta and sautéed vegetables.

When going vegetarian, it is important to experiment with new foods. There are several varieties of grains such as bulgur, barley, wheat berries, and couscous. Even fruits and vegetables are many, and one can try the ones used in international cuisines. Be totally positive. Study charts to understand which foods hold nutritional value and focus on foods that fit into the overall dietary plan, and avoid certain foods that do nothing for the body.

Using the internet can also be a great way of understanding and learning ways of cooking a vegetable. As long as the daily menu is based on strong plant food base, which should be the core of the meal, nothing can go wrong.

Do not fret about not getting enough protein in the diet. As long as the diet is varied and the calories are sufficient, vegetarians have no problem meeting the body's protein needs.

Vegetables, beans, grains, and nuts all provide plenty of protein. Vegetarians do not need to make an attempt to eat any combination of foods to meet protein requirement. However, accumulation of fat in the body is something to be concerned about.

Even vegetarians can store fat in the body if the diet consists of huge amounts of oil, nuts, dairy products, processed foods, or sweets. Processed foods and sweets are by far the most dangerous and it would do good to stay away from them at all times.

Drink fortified soy milk instead of cow's milk. Instead of butter, use olive oil while sautéing. Visit health food stores to get soy cheese instead of consuming the normal cheese available in the market. If all these measures are taken, there is no worry of getting fat on a vegetarian diet.

For meat eaters that are switching to a vegetarian diet, it is difficult to understand where to begin. It is a good idea to start with making a list of the vegetarian food that they are used to eating. Then go one step ahead and select meals that could become meat-free with a few substitutions. For example, vegetarian chili can be made by leaving out ground beef and adding an extra can of soy crumbles and black beans. There are several such substitutions that can be made.

Overall, vegetarianism can be an enjoyable and healthy journey if only one takes all the precautions of not getting into bad eating habits.
