People often compare the South Beach diet to the Atkins diet. However, while the Atkins diet focuses on reducing carbs to the bare minimum, the South beach diet is all about "good carbs".

If you go on the South beach diet, you will eat carbs that have a low glycemic index, have lots of nutrients and are often high in fiber.

A doctor named Arthur Agatston, who treated cardiac patients in Miami, Florida, developed the South Beach diet.

He wanted to give his patients a diet that would encourage weight loss without causing them to develop ketones - a risk with a very low carb diet.
