Diverticulitis is one of the very serious and common diseases of the digestive system, which involves the formation of pockets in the intestine walls known as the diverticula. These pockets then also get inflamed and infected causing further serious complications. However the disease is curable and the sufferers can be relieved if they follow a strict diet pattern especially for the diverticulitis patients. For the patients of the diverticulitis diseases the diet recommended is the low-residue diet which should be taken during he flare-up periods of the disease for the main purpose of decreasing the over all volume of the bowel for the infections to be effectively healed. The low residue diet is not understood by many people; it generally involves a diet which involves the intake of the fiber even less than 10 grams per day. The diverticulitis patients who are on the low-residue diet over a very long time period are also recommended to use the daily multi-vitamin or the mineral supplements as prescribed by the doctors. The Diverticulitis low residue diet includes many different varieties which the patient can include in their own diet. Amongst the grain products the recommended food are the refined white bread, bun, bagels, plain cereals such as the corn flakes etc, white rice and refined pasta and noodles are also suitable for use. The tea biscuits, crackers and english muffins are also allowed to be taken. The diet should also include the fruits and vegetables intake, for proper nutrition levels. The fruit juices are always encouraged to be taken except some of the prune juice. The fruits such as the apricot, banana, apples, peaches, water melon and grapes are also recommended fruits in the diet of diverticulitis patient. Vegetables such as the juices, potatoes are encouraged. Amongst the meat and the protein choices, all types of meat such as the meat, fish and also the eggs are allowed however they should all be well cooked. |
